Under The Influence

  • Rick Sanchez (CNN) Uses Twitter To Spread Gustav Conversations

We are in the middle of watching Hurricane Gustav probably hitting New Orleans by Monday and I’m watching Rick Sanchez on CNN use Social Media in the greatest way that I have ever seen by a traditional media outlet. Rick has setup his own Twitter page at Twitter.com/ricksanchezcnn and is on the air reporting on Gustav and answering “tweets.”

Beyond Rick there seems to be a movement growing online to activate volunteers, spread the message on Twitter, Facebook, Ning. If you are looking for a site http://gustav08.ning.com, seems to be a great spot to help out.

Hill Harper recorded a video message on our very own Youtube channel and on his website/social network.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgsZtwRCk1o&hl=en&fs=1]

Let’s join in and help these folks, this storm is supposed to be a lot worse then Hurricane Katrina.

  • Scott O’neil Now Top Dog At MSG

My guy, Scott Oneil has been named President of Madison Square Garden and that’s a good thing (and not just because I now get to sit behind Spike at Knicks games.) I’m sure this was a shock to many in the sports business world, as O’Neil, who was SVP, Team and Business Marketing Operations was tracking for David Stern’s job in about 20 years. O’Neil is just one of those guys that when around him you get that he is extremely polished, poised and positioned for great things. I had an opportunity to work with him indirectly during his days at Hoops TV and I was at UBO (co-founded by his buddy Seth Berger who founded And 1) and have kept in touch with him ever since. His reputation inside the league office was stellar and his tenacity, smarts and relationships make him an obvious choice to head up MSG. The position was held by Steve Mills who unfortunately was caught up in the recent Isiah Thomas scandal. Mills will now report to O’Neil and you gotta hope that all goes well. Hats off to Scott O’ and the recent announcement.

  • Cargo Leads The HD Makeup Breakthru

As more and more digital technologies are used in video, film/tv there has been a public outcry for the cosmetic industry to create products that address the depth of your pores that these HD media tends to  capture. While this is addressing the cry of those that work in traditional media, fashion and entertainment, this is actually a breath of fresh air for “civilians” too. Cargo, a new brand which sells blu_ray HD Powder ($30.00USD) in Sephora describes the powder as “created to provide flawless results while looking completely natural during high-definition filming.”

    According to Spektra Beauty News
Photochromatic pigments adjust with the lighting so that you have natural looking makeup no matter what the setting, while ultra-fine micronized minerals fill the look of fine lines and reduce the appearance of imperfections.
According to the website, there is a whole backstore on the founder, Hana Zalzal
Nearly ten years ago, Hana Zalzal had a mission: to create a professional color cosmetic line that top makeup artists would covet, yet would be easy enough for all women to enjoy. She recognized that makeup is an intimate part of a woman’s identity; it’s her “cargo.” It should serve as a form of self-expression, as well as make her feel good and look great. So in 1996, …

  • Que Gaskins Joins Nike In A “Big Dog” Role in NYC

While I don’t have the official Nike press release nor has Que called me personally, we are here to report that by way of some very credible sources, Henry “Que” Gaskins has joined Nike in some sort of “Big Dog” position in NYC. Since I don’t have his official title, I do know that it must be a big role because Que is no slouch. Gaskins is most notably known for his work at Reebok and Allen Iverson and according to his linkedin profile describes himself as “Marketing Maven of Pop Culture, Entertainment, Fashion, Sports, Urban and Young Adults”

We recently reported on an amazing viral video The Additive, his marketing agency and team created and now it seems as this long time expert in urban culture has joined the rest of my NIKE familia at the Swoosh. Further solidifying my opportunity to always be dressed in the flyest AF1’s or rare kick, this move on behalf of Nike, Trevor Edwards and Mark Parker is a big one. Simply put Gaskins “gets it”, is super duper connected (he knows me afterall…..oh and Uncle Wes of course) and now that he finally works for a great brand (sorry Reebok) will no doubt do great things for the brand. I tried to wait …

  • Brazil: Exploring The Culture (Sao Paulo/Rio)

Being the “cultural anthropologist” I am, Brazil for me was also about getting to know the people. I’m really glad that I built in time during my trip to get to know the country and the scene. None of this could have happened without the planning and support of Suemyra Shah (NYC) who has deep tentacles and crew in both the Sao Paulo and Rio scene. The experienced made me feel blessed to be able to do what I do for a living and to have the opportunity to share my experience globally. I learned from this trip that I am so connected to my Brazil bretheren and I look forward to many more trips to Brazil.

    Sao Paulo:

Sao Paulo is like Manhattan “times 5.”  With greater Sao Paulo holding 20 million people it is the 3rd largest city in the Americas. The music scene is so refreshing in SP. I really loved the energy and opportunity to experience so much in such a short period of time.

I ended up at a really interesting show with Mike Ladd show at SESC/Santana. Ladd lives in Paris but is originally from Boston and we ended up knowing a lot of the same folks from the music industry in the US. Ladd has a …

  • Sao Paulo Trip: Day One

Had an amazing day with the Ketchum Brazil gang today. I’m here in beautiful Sao Paulo to help them get their interactive media practice started and to keynote or as the call it “Lecture” at Brazil’s largest PR Conference called 11 Congresso Brasileiro de Comunicacao Corporativa. For 40 minutes I will take the Brazilian PR community and brands on a ride thru current online tactics and social media insights, should be a lot of fun and I’m currently practicing speaking a lot slower as this subject tends to excite me and get me going. Luckily I have lived in the south for four years so I have had practice on the slow speech.

After a day of briefing and my energy on one leg, I was taken to the most amazing dinner by Ketchum Brazil partners Valeria Perito and Rosana Monteiro. They took me to this amazing hotel called Hotel Unique in Sao Paulo which is in Jardins. Consider Jardins the Beverly Hills of Sao Paulo. This hotel is the most amazing architecture you will find in a city that already has amazing old school works. When you drive up the building looks it looks like a giant concrete watermelon suspended in space.

The story of the two Ketchum founders is amazing …
